This story is the first of our new series offering up gratitude and appreciation to our families–whether it be our parents, grandparents, friends, lovers, pets or community. Like the sweet tiny notes we either received or wished we received in our lunchboxes as children, the thought of those in our hearts can lift our spirits and keep us going through the day.
“My dad is a Chinese immigrant, the former owner of a Chinese grocery in Flushing, and now, a farmer. It was always a dream of his to retire and start his own agricultural farm. The farm is a turning point in his life—a form of therapy for him to slow down, cultivate and grow things with his own hands.”
In this photo series, photographer Caroline Xia captures her father’s diasporic journey: The intimate moments of hard work, joy and growth shed light on the complexities of the American Dream.
“My father was only able to pursue his dream and start a second life of having his own farm after a lifetime of hard work. After immigrating to America, he had to juggle the stress of being a business owner and raising a family.”
Caroline Xia (she/they) is a portrait, fashion, and documentary photographer & filmmaker. Caroline was born, raised and currently resides in Queens, NY. Caroline focuses on telling stories about East-Asian Americans and children of immigrants in fantastical ways.
