In this series “Girls of China,” photographer Kenneth Lam captures his niece Sophie, aged 10. Different topics of girlhood are explored, from the One Child Policy in which girls were less valued then boys, often leading to extreme cases of illegal abortions, to other depictions of the relationship between girls and money, arranged marriages, homemaking and wifehood. The pictures themselves are playful– in one image, Sophie is seen surrounded by her Grandmother’s antiques. These playful images, however, also serve as commentary on China’s complex relationship between girl and woman, childhood and adulthood, and the expectations both for the individual and the collective sex.
